Musings on the State of American Democracy
Is it failing? Is it in danger of failing?
A Brief Introductory Note
I try to use my platform to entertain, post book reviews, promote my five published books, speak about the power of words, and make you laugh with memes about my sweet little terrier, Finnegan.
But
We live in uncertain times. We live in scary times. We live in divisive times. Politics has become intertwined with ethics and cruelty. I can’t sit by and fail to speak. Despite my efforts to move abroad, America is, and always will be, my home. As much as I dislike so much of what goes on here, American democracy is worth saving. We are the only nation founded on an ideal. What will you do to save it?
Often in history, darkness and hate and cruelty prevail. We. Can. Stop. It. Right here, right now, we can do the right thing. When things seem hopeless, when it feels like everything you care about is under assault, remember that we can prevail. No one fights harder than those who fight for what they love–their rights, their freedom, their country.
We will. And we will do it without violence.
The Trial of the Decade
We may not always agree with the outcome of a trial, but after serving on a criminal trial myself, I can assure you that it is difficult. I truly believe that jurors do their very best. You either respect the law and the jury system or you don’t. Threatening jurors and the judge are not acceptable. Not ever. This is a country of laws, and NO ONE is above the law. No one! So, even if you don’t like the outcome…RESPECT IT!
Having said that, I must point out that the former President is now a convicted felon. If he is reelected, what message does that send to the whole world? Is that what we want America to stand for? Is this the sort of man you want your children to see leading this country?
In Conclusion
I refuse to believe the majority of Americans want the nuclear codes in the hands of a convicted felon who has also been convicted of business fraud and sexual assault. He has classified documents in his bedroom and bathroom. He incited an insurrection to overthrow a free and fair election. He is in love with Putin.
Having said that, we all have work to do. Donate to candidates who will safeguard our democracy, women’s rights, the planet, NATO, and all the things we love. Knock on doors and encourage people to vote. Sign petitions. Write letters to the editor of your local paper. Use your voice and speak out–with kindness and compassion.
Don’t let hate win. Don’t let American democracy fall. Vote wisely in November.
